Data Detectives
Investigate data mysteries by creating and interpreting graphs, finding averages, and drawing conclusions from statistical evidence.

About This Game
Data Detectives turns students into statistical investigators, solving real-world mysteries through data analysis. Each case presents a dataset and a question that can only be answered by organizing, visualizing, and analyzing the data. Students create bar graphs, line plots, pictographs, and line graphs to visualize data. They calculate mean, median, mode, and range to summarize datasets. They interpret graphs to draw conclusions and make predictions. The game features six investigation types: Weather Watchers (temperature and precipitation data), Sports Statistics (player and team performance), Animal Census (wildlife population data), Plant Growth (botanical measurements), School Survey (student preference data), and Money Matters (economic data). With interactive graphing tools, real-world datasets, and the ability to create custom surveys, Data Detectives builds the data literacy skills that are increasingly essential in our data-driven world.
Learning Objectives
- Create and interpret bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots
- Organize and represent data in appropriate graphs
- Calculate mean, median, mode, and range
- Draw conclusions and make predictions from data
- Understand and use measures of central tendency
How to Play
- Select a data investigation to solve
- Review the dataset provided
- Choose the appropriate graph type
- Create your graph using the interactive tools
- Analyze the graph to answer the question
- Submit your conclusion to solve the case
Tips for Success
- Choose the right graph - bar graphs compare categories, line graphs show change over time
- Always label your axes and include a title
- Look for patterns and outliers in the data
- Mean is the average, median is the middle, mode is the most common
